AP Automation for SAP and Oracle: What the ERPs Match Themselves, and 9 Add-Ons Compared
SAP and Oracle already match invoices: S/4HANA through tolerance keys that block the whole invoice when one line is out, Oracle Payables through match levels set per supplier. Capture and approvals are where add-ons earn their place. SAP's Ariba Invoicing is SAP-only; OpenText, Esker, Basware, Medius and Coupa sit above either ERP, none with a price. Below them, we build.

The short answer: the ERP matches, the add-on captures and routes
SAP accounts payable automation and its Oracle equivalent are different from the Sage, QuickBooks and NetSuite markets in one way: the matching engine is already in the ERP and has been for twenty years. S/4HANA's Logistics Invoice Verification and Oracle Payables both compare the invoice to the order and the receipt against tolerances and block or hold what fails. The add-on market exists for everything around that: reading the invoice in the first place, coding non-PO invoices, routing approvals to people who do not log into SAP, and running one AP process across several ERPs.
The table shows what the ERPs do themselves and nine add-ons, read from the vendors' own pages and documentation on 7 November 2026. If you are on Microsoft Dynamics, the equivalent page is AP automation for Business Central and D365 F&O.

Vendor sites and documentation checked 7 November 2026. "Not stated" means the page does not say, which is different from "No". Serrala (FS² AP inside SAP, Alevate AP beside any ERP) and Yooz (SAP and Oracle named in blog copy only) were also read and are discussed below. Full sourcing rule on the compare pages.
Too small for the enterprise suites, too complex for the SMB tools?
A Business One, S/4HANA or Fusion site with its own matching rules sits in a gap. Bring your invoice flow and we will say what fits and what has to be built.
“Reza had some great suggestions and we ended up with a plan much better than what I was thinking of.”
What SAP does by itself
Three products, three sizes, and SAP itself says which is for whom. In its own announcement of the 2024 IDC MarketScape, SAP described "SAP Ariba invoicing solutions for large enterprise and upper midmarket and Concur Invoice for small business and lower midmarket" source.
S/4HANA and ECC: invoice verification blocks the whole invoice
Core S/4HANA matches through Logistics Invoice Verification. Variances are defined by tolerance keys per company code: PP for price, DQ for quantity, DW for quantity when the goods receipt is zero, AN and AP for amounts source. An invoice inside the limits is accepted; one over an upper limit is "automatically blocked for payment", an R goes into the payment block field, and "you must then release the invoice in a separate step" source.
The line that matters for a busy AP desk: "If the invoice is blocked, all the items are blocked, even if the invoice only displays variances in one item." Forty-nine clean lines wait for the one that is out. And if the DW key is not maintained, any invoice with no goods receipt yet is blocked outright. No OCR or AI capture is stated in the core product; that sits in Ariba Invoicing.
SAP Ariba Invoicing: SAP's own capture layer, for SAP only
The product formerly called SAP Central Invoice Management, "renamed to SAP Ariba Invoicing" source, runs on SAP BTP and receives invoices from "scanned images, PDFs, inbound supplier e-mails, Peppol network, and SAP Business Network" with "an embedded AI-powered, self-learning, multi-model OCR capability supported by Joule", then routes "series, parallel, and multilevel approvals" and posts into the ERP source.
Two conditions. It is compatible with "SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, SAP S/4HANA (2022 support pack 1 or later), and SAP ERP Central Component (enhancement package 8 or later)", and "compatibility with third-party ERP systems will be added in future releases". Business One is not on the list. And on S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition the scope item "is excluded from default activation and it requires licenses for additional products" source. Pricing is not published.
SAP Concur Invoice and SAP Business One
Concur Invoice is SAP's AP tool for "small business and lower midmarket": capture from "email, PDF, paper, or electronic formats" with AI OCR, rules-based approval routing, matching "against purchase orders and receipts" and supplier payment workflows source. The product page says invoice data "integrates with ERP and accounting systems" without naming which, and pricing is by quote.
Business One matches by accounting rather than by workflow: the "allocation cost account is a transfer account used to check if goods receipt POs and the A/P invoices match", and the A/P invoice has a payment block checkbox source source. No built-in OCR, tolerance-based auto-blocking or AP approval routing is stated on the pages we read. SAP's own route to automating B1 payables is partner apps on SAP Store, which is where Tipalti's certified integration sits. Business One is also where most of the enterprise add-ons on this page stop: OpenText, Tungsten Process Director and Ariba Invoicing are S/4HANA and ECC products.
What Oracle does by itself
Oracle's matching is more flexible than SAP's out of the box and, like SAP's, defaults to the strict setting.
Fusion Cloud ERP Payables: IDR capture and match levels per supplier
Oracle Fusion includes Intelligent Document Recognition, "a fully integrated invoice recognition solution" that "extracts invoice information from the emailed documents to create invoices and imports them into Payables", learning "from corrections that you make" source. The channel is email: "IDR Inbox receives emails with invoices attached." Whether IDR carries a separate charge is not stated in the documentation we read.
Matching can be two-way, three-way or four-way (adding accepted quantities from inspection), and the level is a supplier-site setting that is independent of the PO's invoice match option source. "You can match a single invoice to multiple purchase orders and you can match multiple invoices to a single purchase order", and an invoice over tolerance "is placed on hold" rather than blocked wholesale source. Pay on Receipt can create the invoice from the receipt and still enforce the match level.
E-Business Suite and JD Edwards
EBS R12 Payables matches to purchase orders or receipts; "when you match to a purchase order, Payables automatically performs two-way approval", with three- or four-way set in Purchasing Options or per supplier and shipment, and a matching hold placed when quantity or price is outside tolerance source. No native OCR is stated.
JD Edwards EnterpriseOne has Voucher Match Automation: nine automation rules per supplier or invoice line, two- and three-way matching, multiple receipts to one invoice line, standard or rounding tolerance, and a workbench to "approve, reject, clear, and process suggested matches" source. What it lacks is capture: "you populate the F0411Z1 and F0411Z1T tables with records for the invoices that you receive", so something upstream has to read the invoice and load the staging table.
The add-ons, one by one
Grouped by what they are: SAP-embedded products, multi-ERP platforms, and the mid-market tool that reaches Business One. Only one publishes a price.
OpenText Vendor Invoice Management for SAP (VIM)
The long-standing default for SAP shops, an "SAP-native invoice management and document processing application" with pre-configured rules, roles and Fiori apps, supporting "all releases from ECC 6 up to the latest S/4HANA releases—whether they run on-premises or in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (RISE with SAP)" source. Two things buyers often assume wrongly: capture is a separate product, "OpenText Capture for SAP Solutions and OpenText Core Capture for SAP Solutions (SaaS)" source, and S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition is not listed. No pricing is published.
Tungsten Automation Process Director and AP Essentials
The former Kofax and ReadSoft products. Process Director is "an SAP-embedded platform" for ECC 6.0 and S/4HANA with Fiori apps, capturing from "paper, PDF, email, e-invoices, EDI, and SAP Ariba" with "automated 2- and 3-way matching", approvals inside SAP for SAP users and a web app for everyone else source source. AP Essentials is the cloud capture product with two- and three-way line matching and ERP export, and the newer InvoiceAgility+ hub "connects to SAP, Oracle, D365, Coupa, and virtually any other ERP" source. The product family has been renamed several times and is still moving; no pricing is published.
Serrala
Two products: FS² AccountsPayable embedded in SAP with "real-time visibility of FI and MM invoices", and Alevate AP, "cloud ERP agnostic", with intelligent document capture, Microsoft Teams and mobile approvals and an "auto-post over 80%" claim source source. Two- and three-way matching is not described in those terms on the pages read, no ERP list beyond SAP is published, and nor is pricing.
Esker
A Lyon-headquartered source-to-pay and order-to-cash platform whose UK office covers Ireland. Capture "across channels such as email, EDI, mail, fax and supplier portals", "three-way matching of purchase orders, receipts, and invoices with full audit trails", and configured approval routing source. Pre-built connectors for SAP, Microsoft, Oracle and Sage, with SAP certification for S/4HANA Cloud; JD Edwards and NetSuite are partner-built source. Esker is one of the few vendors anywhere that states "simultaneous integration with multiple ERPs". No published price.
Basware
Finnish-rooted "Invoice Lifecycle Management" that "sits on its own layer above your ERP estate", built for "the multi-ERP, multi-country, multi-mandate reality every GBS leader operates in", with named customers such as Heineken and Engie source. SmartPDF capture, e-invoicing with 60-plus mandates, SAP-certified connectors for S/4HANA and ECC, Oracle and JDE, and "over 250 ERP systems". Match levels are not spelled out as two- or three-way on the pages read. Positioned at global enterprise and shared-service centres; no SMB tier and no published price.
Medius
"Your ERP remains the system of record. Medius becomes the system of action for AP" source. SAP Certified Integration for both ECC and S/4HANA, managed connectors for Oracle Fusion and Infor, line-level three-way matching with configurable tolerances across multiple POs and deliveries, and "multiple ERPs in parallel" source. Two packages, AP Essentials for one entity and AP 360 for three, no figures source. One inconsistency to check in a demo: the JD Edwards connector is "fully managed" on one Medius page and "partner certified" on another.
Coupa
Business spend management whose AP module is "a layer that makes invoice processing smarter and faster" rather than an ERP replacement: template-free ingestion of any document, a supplier portal, two- and three-way matching with tolerance levels, mobile approval and Coupa Pay source. Integration playbooks exist for SAP (flat files and API) and Oracle E-Business Suite. The Oracle playbook is honest about where matching can live: "Receipts along with Purchase Orders are sent to Oracle so that 3-way matching on the invoice can happen in Oracle" source. Mid-market to large; no published price.
Tipalti
The mid-market option, and the only published price: "Plans starting at $99 /month" with unlimited users plus per-invoice and per-payment transaction fees source. AI Scan reads invoices in 146 languages, matching is two- and three-way, and payments reach 200-plus countries. On SAP, the integration with Business One is "prebuilt, SAP-certified" and on SAP Store in the US and EU source; S/4HANA and Oracle Fusion are listed as "supported by Professional Services" rather than prebuilt source. If you run Business One, this is the one add-on on this page built for you. If you run S/4HANA, it is a services project.
Which one, for which site
SAP Ariba Invoicing if you are on S/4HANA 2022 SP1 or later and can carry the licence. OpenText VIM or Tungsten Process Director if approvers live in SAP and you want the workflow embedded. Budget for capture separately with VIM.
Basware, Esker or Medius. All three sit above SAP and Oracle at once and state multi-ERP operation. Esker's UK office covers Ireland. See also our shared services centre guide.
Switch on IDR and set match levels per supplier site before buying anything. Then Esker, Basware, Medius or Coupa for capture channels, non-PO coding and approvals outside Oracle. JD Edwards needs something to fill the staging table.
Tipalti is the certified, published-price option. Concur Invoice is SAP's own small-company tool. The enterprise suites above do not list Business One.
A single-entity S/4HANA, Fusion or Business One site with its own matching rules, goods receipts in a production or warehouse system, invoices that span several POs, or an approved invoice that must post to the ERP and to a second system. Too small for Basware or OpenText, too specific for a $99 tool. That is a build.
Where the tools stop
- The whole invoice, not the line. S/4HANA blocks every item when one is over tolerance; Oracle holds the invoice. Most add-ons inherit that behaviour because they hand the match back to the ERP. A 49-line invoice with one bad line waits.
- The receipt has to be in the ERP. MM-IV, Oracle Payables, VIM, Process Director and Coupa's Oracle playbook all match against the ERP's goods receipt. When goods are booked in a production, warehouse or field system that posts to the ERP later or in summary, there is nothing to match at invoice time.
- Size gates. SAP's own words put Ariba Invoicing at upper mid-market and above. OpenText and Tungsten Process Director are S/4HANA and ECC products. Basware is built for global shared service centres. A Business One or single-entity Fusion site is below all of them, and above the general small-business tools on our QuickBooks and Sage pages.
- Prices are a conversation. Ten of the eleven vendors publish nothing. Tipalti's $99 floor is real but excludes transaction fees and treats S/4HANA and Fusion as services work.
- Two systems. Esker, Basware and Medius state multi-ERP operation, which means one AP process across several ledgers. None describes one approved invoice posting to the ERP and to an operational system that is not an ERP.
Too small for the enterprise suites, too specific for the SMB tools?
A Business One, S/4HANA or Fusion site with its own matching rules sits in a gap. Bring your invoice flow and in 30 minutes we will say what fits and what has to be built.
What a custom build looks like beside SAP or Oracle
When the gap above is yours, we build the layer rather than buy a suite sized for someone else. The ERP stays the system of record and keeps its own posting controls; the automation sits beside it and writes only what a person has approved, through the ERP's own interfaces: the Service Layer on Business One, OData and the API hub on S/4HANA, REST on Fusion, the open interfaces on EBS, the orchestrator on JD Edwards.
- Capture with a gate. Invoices arrive in a dedicated inbox or portal. AI extraction reads header and lines, and every extraction is reconciled against the invoice's own printed totals before anything moves. In the production build this pattern comes from, 1,500 invoices a month against POs in an industrial distributor's ERP, that gate caught the AI reading an extended total as a unit price, a $23,908 error on a $4,391 invoice, in its first run.
- Match where the receipt is. POs from the ERP; receipts from the ERP or from the production, warehouse or field system where goods are actually booked in. Line by line, across several POs and receipts, with per-supplier SKU and unit-of-measure rules and tolerances per supplier and per line.
- Hold the line, not the invoice. Clean lines are ready; the one over tolerance waits for a person with invoice, PO and receipt side by side and the reason recorded. The ERP's own block never fires because only matched, approved data reaches it.
- Post once, to each system. The approved invoice is created in SAP or Oracle against its PO, and the same approved record posts to the second system if there is one.
Cost shape is a one-off build plus small hosting costs rather than an enterprise licence. The automation ROI calculator puts a number on that for your volume, and the cost per invoice calculator shows what manual processing costs today. The method is in the accounts payable automation guide; the service page is accounts payable automation.
How to choose, in five questions
- Which product, exactly? S/4HANA, ECC, Business One, Fusion, EBS or JD Edwards. Ariba Invoicing, VIM and Process Director are S/4HANA and ECC only; Tipalti's certified integration is Business One only.
- Is the problem capture, approvals or matching? The ERP already matches. If the pain is reading invoices and chasing approvers, any add-on helps. If the pain is the match rule itself, see the build section.
- Where is the goods receipt? In the ERP: the add-ons work. Elsewhere: a build.
- One ERP or several? Several: Basware, Esker or Medius. One: the embedded options or the ERP's own layer.
- Does one invoice ever post to two places? If yes, only the multi-ERP platforms come close, and none states it for a non-ERP system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does SAP S/4HANA do three-way matching by itself?
Yes, through Logistics Invoice Verification. Tolerance keys per company code define acceptable price and quantity variances; an invoice over an upper limit is blocked for payment and released in a separate step. When one item is over tolerance, all items on the invoice are blocked.
What is SAP Central Invoice Management now called?
SAP Ariba Invoicing. It runs on SAP BTP with AI OCR supported by Joule and connects to S/4HANA Cloud, S/4HANA 2022 SP1 or later and ECC EhP8 or later. SAP says third-party ERP compatibility will come in future releases, and it needs an extra licence on S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition.
Does Oracle Fusion include invoice capture?
Yes. Intelligent Document Recognition reads invoices emailed to an IDR inbox, creates Payables invoices and learns from corrections. Matching can be two-, three- or four-way, set per supplier site, and an invoice over tolerance is placed on hold. Whether IDR carries a separate charge is not stated.
Which AP automation tools work with SAP Business One?
Tipalti has a prebuilt, SAP-certified Business One integration on SAP Store, from $99 a month plus transaction fees. SAP Concur Invoice is SAP's own small-company tool. Ariba Invoicing, OpenText VIM and Tungsten Process Director are S/4HANA and ECC products and do not list Business One.
How much does AP automation for SAP or Oracle cost?
Almost nothing is published. Tipalti starts at $99 a month plus per-invoice and per-payment fees, with S/4HANA and Fusion as professional-services integrations. Ariba Invoicing, Concur, OpenText, Esker, Basware, Medius, Tungsten, Serrala and Coupa all quote. Expect a conversation, not a price list.
Can one AP tool run across SAP and Oracle at the same time?
Basware, Esker and Medius state multi-ERP operation, with certified SAP connectors and Oracle connectors in the same platform. SAP Ariba Invoicing connects to several SAP systems but no third-party ERP yet. OpenText VIM and Tungsten Process Director are SAP-embedded only.

Accounts Payable Automation for Business Central and Dynamics 365 F&O
Business Central and D365 F&O know which purchase orders are open. They don't know that a supplier billed in cases when the PO ordered eaches, or that one damaged-parts credit memo on a consolidated invoice shouldn't hold up the other 49 lines. Here's the matching architecture that fixes that, from a production build.
