AP Automation for Sage: What Works With Sage 50, Sage 200 and Sage Intacct

Which Sage you run decides the answer. Sage Intacct has AI capture, PO matching and approvals built in, and the big AP platforms connect. Sage 200 has invoice and PO authorisation natively plus a few UK add-ons. Sage 50 now captures invoices itself but has no approval workflow, and most tools reach it by CSV or a connector. Key Takeaway

Where none fits, we build.

The short answer: it depends which Sage

Sage AP automation is three different markets wearing one name. Sage Intacct is a cloud mid-market ledger with its own AP Automation agent and a long list of connected platforms. Sage 200 is a UK and Irish mid-market product with purchase invoice authorisation built in and a handful of specialist add-ons. Sage 50 is the owner-managed workhorse that most vendors claim and few connect to deeply. Searching for "Sage AP automation" without the edition gets you a list that is half wrong for your business.

The table shows which of ten tools post to each edition, read from each vendor's own integration pages on 7 November 2026. "Partly" usually means a CSV export or an installed connector rather than a live API; the note says which.

What each Sage edition does by itself

Start here, because the gap you are paying to close is different in each edition. Sage's own feature comparison is the source for most of this source.

Sage 50 Accounts: capture is now built in, approval is not

This is the edition most AP tools claim and fewest serve well, and it has changed in 2026. Sage 50 Accounts in the UK and Ireland now includes AI document capture: "Upload or email purchase invoices. AI extracts and pre-fills details for approval", with supplier, tax amounts and nominal code suggested and duplicates flagged. Standard includes 50 captures a month and Professional 75, then £0.20 (UK) or €0.23 (Ireland) per additional approved capture. Professional starts from £262 plus VAT a month in the UK and €276.50 in Ireland source source.

So a small Sage 50 shop keying 40 invoices a month no longer needs AutoEntry or Dext to stop keying. What Sage 50 still does not have, by Sage's own table, is any of the following: purchase invoice authorisation, purchase order authorisation or purchase requisitions. Each is a cross for Sage 50 and a tick for every Sage 200 edition source. Purchase orders themselves, with goods received notes and staged deliveries, exist on Sage 50 Professional only.

That shapes the market. Every Sage 50 AP tool is really selling one of three things: capture (which Sage now bundles), an approval workflow (which Sage 50 cannot do), or matching to orders and receipts that live in Sage 50 Professional or somewhere else entirely. The connection method matters too: Sage 50 is a desktop database, so Dext needs a Windows app running on the Sage machine, Lightyear exports a CSV, and Zahara installs an on-premise sync module. The Sage integration page describes how we read and write Sage 50 through a REST layer over its data for a job-costing build; the same layer carries purchase invoices.

Sage 200: authorisation and matching are native, capture is not

Sage 200 Standard and Professional both include purchase invoice authorisation, purchase order authorisation and requisitions, and Professional adds authorisation notifications and web forms to "authorise supplier transaction" from a browser. Sage lists "Dispute invoice during invoice matching" and a different "approach to matching invoice to order" among its advantages over Sage 50 source.

What Sage 200 does not state on any page we read is OCR or AI invoice capture. That is why the Sage 200 add-on market is capture-led and UK-specific: Sicon's Document Automation reads emailed invoices with Azure OCR and matches them to PO lines and goods received confirmations inside Sage 200, priced per document from £0.50 down to £0.29 prepaid, with approvals in a separate Sicon Approvals module source source. Compleat posts in real time with a link back to the invoice image. Yooz reaches Sage 200 Cloud through a third-party Zynk connector with two-way matching only, and says "the level of synchronisation varies by Sage version and connector" source.

Notably absent from Sage 200: AutoEntry and Dext (neither lists it), Stampli (lists Sage 50, 100, 300 and Intacct, not 200), and Lightyear's live API (CSV only unless you add Besyncly).

Sage Intacct: the AP Automation agent, and everyone connects

Intacct is the edition where buying may be the whole answer. Sage's own AP Automation agent "creates draft bills, matches them to POs instantly, and routes approval for you": upload or email an invoice, Sage Ai extracts supplier, amount, dates and line items, matches to purchase orders, flags duplicates and routes to predefined approval workflows source source. Pricing is by quote.

Every platform in the table with a live API lists Intacct: Lightyear, Zahara (Business plan and above), Compleat, Yooz, Tipalti and Stampli. The reasons to add one anyway are the ones Intacct's page does not cover: supplier payments in many currencies (Tipalti), a purchasing front end with budgets (Zahara, Lightyear), or an invoice coding assistant that learns from history (Stampli). Watch the fine print: Tipalti's help centre says Intacct tax sync is "not supported in combination with Intacct PO matching" source.

The tools, one by one

In order of how far down the Sage range they reach. Prices are the vendor's list prices on 7 November 2026, excluding VAT, on the country page named.

AutoEntry (Sage)

Sage's own capture tool, "a separate, usage-based subscription service, although it is an integrated product within the Sage portfolio" source. Documents come in by mobile app, email or upload and post to the ledger. Credits are monthly with unlimited users: Bronze 50 credits at £15.45 (€18.75), Silver 100 at £27.65, Gold 200 at £51.95, Platinum 500 at £119.35, Diamond 1,500 at £331.50, Sapphire 2,500 at £518.25; unused credits keep for 90 days source.

Sage: Sage Accounting and Sage 50cloud UK, US and Canada. Sage 200 and Intacct are not listed. Matching: "Purchase Order matching" is claimed without saying what kind. Approvals: none described. With Sage 50 now bundling capture and some AutoEntry credits, AutoEntry's case is volume above the bundled allowance.

Dext

Capture by mobile, email, WhatsApp or automatic invoice fetch, coded against the Sage chart of accounts and published after review. One business plan: £24.17 a month billed annually or £30 monthly, five users, 250 documents; line-item extraction is an add-on from £16.50 a month source.

Sage: Sage 50 UK (2022.3 or newer) and Sage 50 Canada, through Dext Connect, "a Windows application installed on the same computer or server as Sage 50" that must stay online; cost codes do not sync and bank match is not supported source. Sage 200 and Intacct are not in Dext's Sage help collection. Matching: not stated for Sage. Payments: Dext Payments is "UK only — requires a Xero integration", so it is not available to Sage users source.

Lightyear

Purchasing and AP automation with line-item extraction, approvals up to eight levels and statement reconciliation, priced by credits with unlimited users. UK: Essentials 125 credits a month at £130; Standard 250 credits at £179, which is the plan that adds goods received notes and three-way matching; Professional on quote. One invoice, statement or PO is one credit source.

Sage: "Lightyear exports approved invoice as a pre-formatted CSV file that maps directly to Sage 50's required format"; Sage 200 is also CSV, with an optional Besyncly API partner; Intacct is "a live 2-way API" source source. Matching: three-way against PO and GRN at line level, on Standard and above. Payments: not stated. The CSV route means a Sage 50 or 200 user still imports a file; it is cheap and it works, but it is not posting.

Zahara

UK purchase-to-pay with requisitions, POs, budgets, AI invoice reading to line level, multi-step approvals and supplier payments including international. Teams £159 a month (10 users, 120 orders, 250 invoices), Business £289, Enterprise £499, hosted on Azure with UK support source.

Sage: Sage 50 "Professional and above" and Sage 200 Standard and Professional, both through SmartSync, an on-premise module that needs database or API access and is "a paid add-on" priced on application; only purchase invoices flow to Sage 50, while Sage 200 and Intacct also sync purchase orders source. Intacct is a web services integration "included in Zahara Business and Enterprise plans", so not in Teams source. Matching: invoice to PO and delivery note. Read-only approvers count towards the user cap.

Compleat Software

Purchasing and AP automation for SMEs with AI capture ("99.6% accurate" is the claim), two- or three-way matching, touchless non-PO processing, mobile approvals and payment status checks. UK and US offices; pricing is a tailored quote with a "fixed price per invoice processed" element source.

Sage: "Compatible with all Sage 50 Accounting Versions" including charity funds and all dimensions; Sage 200 in real time with a URL link to the invoice image inside Sage 200, implemented "in a couple of days"; Intacct with PDFs sent into Intacct and custom dimensions source source source. The broadest Sage coverage on this list, with the least published about price. For matching, Compleat imports POs and receipts from the ERP, so the receipt has to be in Sage first.

Yooz

Cloud purchase-to-pay with capture from email, scan, supplier portal, electronic feeds and SFTP, configurable approvals, and Sage left as "your financial system of record" that records entries and executes payments. UK Business Edition from £129 a month by document volume, unlimited users source.

Sage: the UK FAQ answers "Which Sage versions are supported?" with Sage Intacct, Sage X3 and Sage 200 Cloud. Intacct is a native real-time API with two- or three-way matching; Sage 200 Cloud is "Connector via Zynk" with two-way matching; Sage 50 is not in the list, though a blog post and an infographic describe a connector source. Ask which connector you would actually get before a demo.

Tipalti

Global payables for mid-market: supplier onboarding, AI Scan capture, two- and three-way matching at header and line with tolerances, rule-based approvals, and payments by ACH, wire, cheque, card and local methods in 200-plus countries. Plans from $99 a month with unlimited users plus per-invoice and per-payment transaction pricing source source.

Sage: the integrations hub says Tipalti is "a Sage Tech Partner Plus that provides Certified Global AP Automation for Sage Intacct, Sage 50, Sage 100, Sage 200, Sage 300, and X3" source, but the pricing FAQ names only Intacct among Sage products as a native bi-directional integration, and the help centre documents Intacct setup only. Treat Sage 50 and 200 as "ask", and Intacct as the real product. The payments rail is the reason to buy it.

Sicon Document Automation

Sage 200 only, "written within the Sage 200 development environment". Supplier invoices emailed to a unique address or a monitored Exchange 365 mailbox are read by Azure OCR and matched "to Purchase Orders and Purchase Order Lines, Goods Received Confirmations and Sicon Projects" inside Sage 200. Prepaid document bundles with no expiry: £0.50 each for 1,000 down to £0.29 for 200,000, plus a £102 site licence; approvals with variances need Sicon Approvals "at an additional cost", and CIS invoices are processed manually source source. The only per-document price list on this page, and the only tool whose matching uses Sage 200's own GRN.

Stampli

Procure-to-pay built around the invoice, with an AI assistant that codes and routes, payments, and "more than 70 cloud and on-premises ERPs". The ERP finder lists Sage, Sage 50, Sage 100, Sage 300, Sage 300 CRE, Sage Intacct and Sage Intacct Construction; Sage 200 is not there, and "integration depth and supported data vary by ERP and configuration" source. Pricing is by quote, and two- and three-way matching is "semi-automated" in the base price with full automation as an upsell source. Compared in more depth against Onphase, AP Express and Xledger in the mid-market AP comparison.

Which one, by edition

Sage 50, under 100 invoices a month

Use the built-in AI capture first. Add Dext for mobile receipts and multi-source capture, or AutoEntry once you pass the bundled allowance. Accept that there is no approval workflow.

Sage 50 Professional, with POs and approvals

Zahara (SmartSync add-on) or Compleat for approvals and matching with a real connector; Lightyear if a CSV import is acceptable and £130 a month is the budget.

Sage 200

Sicon if you want capture and GRN matching inside Sage 200 at a per-document price. Compleat or Zahara for a purchasing front end with budgets. Skip the tools that do not list Sage 200.

Sage Intacct

Try the AP Automation agent first. Add Tipalti for global payments, Stampli for coding that learns, Lightyear or Zahara for purchasing.

The rules are yours

Goods receipts in a system that is not Sage, invoices that span several POs, tolerances by supplier, or one approved invoice that has to post to Sage and to a production or job system at the same time. No vendor above states this. That is a build.

Where the tools stop

  1. The goods receipt is not in Sage. Three-way matching needs a record of what arrived. On Sage 50 Standard there is no GRN at all; on Professional and Sage 200 there is, if your warehouse uses it. In practice the receipt often lives in a production ERP, a stock system or a job-costing tool. Compleat and Sicon match against receipts in Sage; Lightyear and Zahara record their own; none reads a receipt from a third system.
  2. Sage 50 is reached sideways. CSV exports (Lightyear), an installed Windows app (Dext), an on-premise sync module (Zahara), or a listing with no documentation (Tipalti, Stampli). Each works; each is a second place for data to go wrong, and each is why the "Sage 50" tick in a vendor's logo wall is worth checking.
  3. Approval on Sage 50 means leaving Sage. Sage's own table says no authorisation on Sage 50, so the workflow has to live in the tool, and the tool has to be the place approvers actually look.
  4. One invoice to two systems is never stated. Every vendor's "posting to two systems" answer was blank. An enquiry that reached us this month is typical: a fabrication business needs supplier invoices matched to the purchase order and goods received note in its production ERP, then posted to that ERP and to Sage 50 at the same time. No tool on this page claims to do it.
  5. Sage 200 is a smaller market than the logos suggest. AutoEntry, Dext and Stampli do not list it; Yooz reaches it through a third party with two-way matching only. The real Sage 200 list is Sicon, Compleat and Zahara.

On Sage 50 or Sage 200 and none of these quite fit?

Tell us which Sage edition you run, your monthly invoice count and what else the invoice has to post to. In 30 minutes we will say whether a ready-made tool covers it or a build does.

What a custom build looks like on Sage

When the gaps above are your week, we build the layer rather than bend a tool. Sage stays the ledger and the system of record; the automation sits beside it and writes only what a person has approved.

  1. Capture with a gate. Invoices arrive in a dedicated inbox or portal. AI extraction reads header and lines, and every extraction is reconciled against the invoice's own printed totals before anything moves. In the production build this pattern comes from, 1,500 invoices a month, that gate caught the AI reading an extended total as a unit price, a $23,908 error on a $4,391 invoice, in its first run.
  2. Match against where the truth is. The PO and the goods receipt are read from wherever they live: Sage 200's purchase ledger, Sage 50 Professional's order processing, or a production ERP or stock system that Sage has never heard of. Line by line, with per-supplier SKU and unit-of-measure rules and your tolerances, so 49 clean lines post and the one over tolerance waits.
  3. Approve where people are. Exceptions go to the right approver with invoice, PO and receipt side by side and the reason recorded, by email, Teams or a web screen. That is the authorisation step Sage 50 does not have.
  4. Post once, to each ledger. The approved invoice is written to Sage, to the correct nominal code and supplier, through Sage 200's API, Intacct's web services or the REST layer we run over Sage 50 data. If a second system needs the same entry, it gets it from the same approved record. The Sage job-costing build uses this posting layer today, with nominal code mapping the finance team edits themselves.

Cost shape is a one-off build plus small hosting costs rather than a per-user or per-document fee forever. The automation ROI calculator puts a number on that for your volume, and the cost per invoice calculator shows what manual processing costs today. The method is in the accounts payable automation guide; the service page is accounts payable automation.

How to choose, in five questions

  1. Which edition, exactly? Sage 50 Standard has no POs. Sage 50 Professional has POs and GRNs but no authorisation. Sage 200 has authorisation. Intacct has the lot. Half the vendor list falls away at this step.
  2. Is capture the problem, or approval, or matching? Sage 50 now bundles capture. If approval is the problem, you need a tool with a workflow, which rules out AutoEntry and the built-in capture. If matching is the problem, see question three.
  3. Where does the goods receipt live? In Sage: Compleat or Sicon match against it. Nowhere: Lightyear or Zahara record it. In another system: a build.
  4. How will the tool connect? Live API (Intacct, Sage 200 with Compleat or Sicon), installed connector (Dext, Zahara SmartSync), or CSV (Lightyear). Decide what you can live with before the demo.
  5. Does one invoice ever post to two places? If yes, no tool on this page claims to do it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sage 50 have AP automation built in?

Partly. Sage 50 Accounts (UK and Ireland) now includes AI invoice capture: 50 captures a month on Standard, 75 on Professional, then £0.20 or €0.23 each. It has no purchase invoice authorisation, PO authorisation or requisitions, by Sage's own feature table. Approvals need an add-on or a build.

Which AP automation tools work with Sage 200?

Sicon Document Automation (inside Sage 200, per-document pricing), Compleat (real-time, quote) and Zahara (via its paid SmartSync module). Yooz reaches Sage 200 Cloud through a Zynk connector with two-way matching. Lightyear exports CSV. AutoEntry, Dext and Stampli do not list Sage 200.

Does Sage Intacct do three-way matching?

Sage's AP Automation agent captures invoices by email or upload, extracts line items and matches them to purchase orders with AI, then routes approval. Tipalti, Yooz, Lightyear, Zahara and Compleat add their own matching on top, with Tipalti stating configurable tolerances.

What does AP automation for Sage cost?

Published UK prices: AutoEntry from £15.45 a month, Dext £24.17, Yooz from £129, Lightyear £130 or £179, Zahara £159 to £499, Sicon £0.29 to £0.50 per document. Tipalti is from $99 a month plus transaction fees. Compleat, Stampli and Sage Intacct AP Automation are quote only.

Can AutoEntry or Dext post to Sage Intacct?

Neither lists Intacct. AutoEntry's Sage page covers Sage Accounting and Sage 50cloud UK, US and Canada. Dext's Sage help collection covers Sage 50 UK and Canada, Sage Accounting and Pastel. Intacct users should look at Lightyear, Zahara, Compleat, Yooz, Tipalti or Stampli.

Can a supplier invoice be posted to Sage and a second system at the same time?

No vendor on this page states it. It is the most common reason a Sage user asks us for a build: match against the production or stock system holding the goods receipt, hold exceptions for a person, then post the approved invoice to Sage and the matching entry elsewhere.
